As a go-to executional partner for leading brands and PR agencies for experiential events, Synergy Events is reviewing the best event sites in New York City as part of a series of nine videos and blog posts. We'll be taking a look at Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, Union Square Park, Herald Square, South Street Seaport, Bryant Park, Penn Station, Madison Square Park and the World Financial Center.
These site reviews will be helpful if your brand or client is planning a media-driven product launch, pr stunt, sponsorship activation or consumer event in New York City.
Here is Synergy's overview of the "Crossroads of the World" Times Square. Here is a one minute video overview:
There are three different venues for outdoor events in Times Square: Duffy Square, Military Island and the Pedestrian Plazas.
Duffy Square - Duffy Square is located in the north end of Times Square at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It is directly below the TKTS ticket booth which includes tiered bleacher-style seating overlooking the square. Fun fact about this event site: It takes its name from Father Francis P. Duffy, the chaplain from the famous 'Fighting 69th' New York regiment. His statue stands at the foot of the square.
Military Island - Military Island is the mirror opposite of Duffy Square on the south end of Times Square. The square is the home to an Armed Forces Recruiting Station and is located directly across from Good Morning America.
Pedestrian Plazas - New York City adopted pedestrian plazas in 2009. Broadway between 42nd and 47th became traffic free pedestrian zones. These five blocks provide ample space for an event.
Things we like about Times Square:
-
Built in traffic - More than 1.5 million people pass through Times Square each day, making it an ideal place for an experiential marketing event.
-
Media friendly - Times Square is located in Midtown, making your event easily accessible to the media.
-
Cost - Medium to high site fee depending on your event components.
Additional tips when considering a Times Square event:
-
Limited availability on Wednesday's and Saturday's due to matinees.
-
Your event footprint needs to stand out. Everything competes for attention in Times Square.
-
You need to plan for emergency access by maintaining a clear lane in the Pedestrian Plazas.
Times Square is an ideal venue for your next product launch, PR event sponsorship activation or experiential consumer event.
